A Russian Su-27 jet collided with a US MQ-9 drone over the Black Sea on Tuesday morning, according to the US military, resulting in a crash and loss of the drone.
“Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft,” said“Several times before the collision, the Su-27s dumped fuel on and flew in front of the MQ9 in a reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional manner,” the statement continued. “This incident demonstrates a lack of competence in addition to being unsafe and unprofessional.
EUCOM added that the US and allies would continue to fly missions in the area over international waters close to Russian and Ukrainian territory. The MQ-9 has been described as the “mainstay” of the US unmanned aerial vehicle fleet with per-unit cost of around $32m .
