Russian and Belarusian flags have been banned at the 2023 Australian Open following a courtside incident on Tuesday.
’s invasion of Ukraine is still ongoing and Australian Open organisers have now decided to ban Russian and Belarusian flags immediately after they initially permitted fans to bring them in as long as they did not cause ‘disruption’.
Ukrainian spectators say they called police and security to the first-round match on Monday, while Russian supporters have argued they were simply cheering their countrywoman on at the major tennis tournament. Tennis Australia said in a statement: ‘We will continue to work with the players and our fans to ensure the best possible environment to enjoy the tennis.’: ‘This is profoundly unsafe, the war is ongoing.
‘It’s a small court, the guys were extremely close to the players, so there was an element of what I felt was intimidation.’ I strongly condemn the public display of the Russian flag during the game of the Ukrainian tennis player Kateryna Baindl at the Australian Open today. I call on Tennis Australia to immediately enforce its âneutral flagâ policy.
