“I feel relieved of this story in many ways,” nlyonne tells V.F. “I think it was, for me, a real albatross. For at least a decade, if not a lifetime.”
“There’s something about the presence of a comedic giant that is so calming for the soul,” Lyonne said. “It really feels like they’re seeing sort of all the things and sort of twisting it into their very own language.… They can sort of bend air and create a safe space. It feels like a very safe container and sort of framing for kind of such a heavy, personal story. And it feels like it’s safe because you feel so seen. You know, because life is so strange.
Nadia reminds Lyonne of her past self: The character has been forced to carry a certain amount of pain, and likely always will. “It’s something that’s forever going to define my sense of self and the way I see the world, and how clear it is to me, essentially, that we’re not here for very long,” the actor said. “It’s a razor’s edge to exist at all, day to day. That’s something that’s sort of crystal clear in my bones.
“I kind of agree with everything Nadia says at the beginning,” she continued. “Her thoughts on love, her thoughts on mortality, her thoughts on her family history: I don’t think any of those are wrong; I think she’s just not really seeking…She’s in stasis as a character, rather than in growth or in movement.”
That stasis is evident in Nadia’s manner, and in the way she dresses. Nadia’s wardrobe is both stylish and highly regimented; she operates within a limited color palette and a similarly narrow set of cuts and styles. Those boundaries, according to“reflect the austerity of the character.” But her style also contains many layers and contradictions, which hint at the shades of gray that lie within a seemingly black-and-white character who uses clothing as armor.
“She has distilled her look down to her uniform that works for her, which is based on a lot of my New York friends,” Rogien said. The general philosophy: “It can’t be fussy. It’s gotta work, it’s gotta be interesting, it’s gotta be cool. It’s gotta be a reflection of who you are, what you do, what you think is important—and you gotta still be able to walk down the street, and dodge taxis and jump over subway grates and make it to work.
