Russian dissidents have joined the British secret services as spies since the start of the war in Ukraine, the boss of M16 has revealed, as he urged others to do the same
“As they witnessed the venality, infighting and sheer callous incompetence of their leaders – the human factor at its worst – many Russians were wrestling with the same dilemmas and the same tugs of conscious as their predecessors did in 1968 [during the Russian invasion of then Czechoslovakia].
“And together we will work to bring the bloodshed to an end. My service lives by the principle that the loyalty to our agents is lifelong and our gratitude eternal.”Sir Richard admitted that a Ukrainian counter offensive was a “hard grind” and that the Russians had “put in defences which are very difficult to overcome.”
But the MI6 boss would not be drawn on what it would take to end the war, saying it was “for Ukraine to define the terms of peace, not us, but our job is to put them in the strongest possible position to negotiate.”
