The Ukrainian unit hailed a 'lightning-fast operation' in which almost all of the Russian forces were 'liquidated'
in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian unit that captured the settlement claimed.
“As a result of a lightning-fast operation, the Russian garrison of Andriivka was surrounded, cut off from the main forces and destroyed,” read a post on the Telegram channel of Ukraine’s Third Separate Assault Brigade. The Ukrainian brigade claimed to have “liquidated… almost all of the infantry of [Russia’s] 72nd Brigade, along with officers and a significant amount of equipment”.
A Russian brigade would typically comprise more than 1,000 soldiers – but the unit was known to have suffered extensive attrition over the course of the war.
The Kremlin has not commented on the loss of Andriivka but it was corroborated by several Russian military correspondents reporting from the area.
