Russian forces shelled Ukrainian civilians trying to escape a Kyiv suburb, and a second evacuation attempt from southeast cities failed
IRPIN, Ukraine—A line of yellow school buses pulled up on a forested roadside in this once-prosperous suburb of Kyiv on Sunday,People dove for cover, hugging the ground. Frightened pets ran into the woods.
A father, mother and a child were killed. The family’s bodies fell near one another by a monument to local soldiers who died fighting Germany in World War II. Their gray suitcase stood nearby, untouched by the blast.
