Russia allocates $1 billion to complete Rossiya, a Leader-class nuclear icebreaker, with a 120 MW plant, doubling previous icebreaker levels.
The 69,700-ton Rossiya , with two RITM-400 reactors, will break through 13 feet thick ice, nearly doubling the capacity of Arktika-class icebreakers.To that extent, its proposed federal budget has allocated almost $1 billion over the next three years for the completion of Rossiya , its largest nuclear icebreaker.
The ship is scheduled to have a 120 MW power plant, which will make it twice as powerful as any prior nuclear icebreaker.While operating costs are higher, these icebreakers offer significant advantages over diesel-powered ones, particularly along the Northern Sea Route. The heavy power demands of icebreaking, the limited refueling options along the Siberian coast, and the endurance required make diesel vessel operations difficult in this region.
