Ukraine is still recovering from the latest Russian airstrikes. Ukraine's air defenses have proved more resilient than expected. But can it cope this winter with an onslaught on the electricity grid?

Ukrainians walk through the unlit streets of the capital Kyiv on Thursday, a day after Russian airstrikes knocked out electricity, heating and water to much of the country. With Russian troops faring poorly on the battlefield, Russia has launched a widespread bombing campaign directed at civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

"Honestly, it's a very strange feeling," said Ganich."Because on the front line, I witnessed bullets above my head, tank shelling, mortar shelling, and I survived. And when I came here to Kyiv, it's strange, because, it just feels like it's destiny."In the latest barrage, Russia fired 70 cruise missiles on Wednesday. This knocked out electricity, heating and water in many cities and further damaged the already fragile power system.

Ukrainian firemen put out a blaze at a building hit by a Russian missile in Kyiv. Russia fired 70 missiles at Ukraine on Wednesday the latest barrage in a stepped up air campaign against the country's civilian infrastructure."Ukraine does not have enough firepower to be fully protected from the sky. That is why we ask the whole world to help Ukraine by any means," said Col. Yurii Ihnat, the spokesman for Ukraine's Air Force.

Ukraine says most of the country's power plants and substations have been hit and damaged since the stepped up Russian air campaign began Oct. 10.
