The expansion of Russia's paramilitary outfit, the Wagner Group, in recent months has made the Sahel region more vulnerable to violent extremism, according to Rear Admiral Jamie Sands, the commander of the United States Special Operations Command Africa.

Zambian student Lemekhani Nyirenda may have been recruited by the Wagner Group to fight in Russia's war on Ukraine. A two-week-long US Africa Command military exercise brought together 1 300 personnel from 29 countries.

The expansion of Russia's paramilitary outfit, the Wagner Group, in recent months has made the Sahel region more vulnerable to violent extremism, according to Rear Admiral Jamie Sands, the commander of the United States Special Operations Command Africa . According to Sands, al-Qaeda presents the biggest challenge as it spreads its tentacles in the Sahel region, which covers Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, The Gambia, Guinea Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Senegal."It’s the threat of al-Qaeda’s continued expansion through the Sahel, and the concern is that al-Qaeda will continue to grow and expand through the Sahel and threaten the coastal West African countries," he said.

The Wagner Group's playbook is straightforward. The outfit thrives in unstable and ungovernable countries due to coups, poverty, and corruption. Through Flintlock, helping countries in the Sahel region better equip and prepare against violent extremism, Niger has emerged as a big player."They are focused on the threat. They have an effective force. They continue to build that force, to train that force, and they’re exceptional partners.
