Anatoly Maslov’s lawyer said that the elderly scientists was shocked by the sentence but plans to appeal against it.
A Russia n court has sentenced a 77-year-old hypersonic missile scientist to 14 years in prison on treason charges. The scientist was accused of revealing secret information related to Moscow’s weapons program with Germany, a NATO country.at the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics of the Russia n Academy of Sciences’ Siberian Branch in 2022 when he was arrested.Maslov hailed from the same institute as Alexander Shiplyuk and Valery Zvegintsev.
The three scientists had conducted theoretical work in areas relevant to the development of hypersonic missiles. The other two are awaiting trial, as perreport quotes Lawyer Yevgeny Smirnov of Pervy Otdel stating that the charges against the three are more or less similar, that of divulging secret information while attending an international conference or during research.
Smirnov also goes on state that he believed Maslov was innocent and the conviction is “a gross violation of the law.” Maslov’s lawyer told reporters that the elderly scientists was shocked by the sentence but plans to appeal against it. Olga Dinze, the lawyer,They also mentioned that the scientist was not allowed to see the documents which hinted at him being guilty as the prosecuting agency termed them ‘classified.’It should also be noted that through an open letter last year, colleagues at Maslov’s former institute had stated that the three scientists were innocent.
The open letter also mentioned that the crackdown on scientists was leaving a bad taste and it made the academia fearful of doing their jobs. The country has made lots of progress in the field and today it boasts of hypersonic missile arsenal which is second only to that of China’s.It remains to be seen how the scientific community in Russia will react to the sentencing of the elderly scientist.
