Russian government voted in overwhelming favor to abolish term limits, setting up yet another term for Vladimir Putin

But, and there is always a but, an amendment to the Constitution is possible should elected officials in the State Duma agree to one.

Putin’s party, United Russia, has around 340 seats in the Duma. The main opposition party, the old Communist Party, has around 43 seats. It is unclear if all of the old Stalinists and Leninists in that Party voted to in favor of keeping term limits, which would be ironic.Putin did not say whether he would participate in that election.

Putin’s leadership after the fall of the Soviet Union has been one party statist — with most of the big companies still controlled by Kremlin appointees — and one part pre-Bolshovik Revolution, with Putin being the new Czar.
