The Russian Federation is seeking a High Court injunction against laws stripping it of a 99-year lease for land less than 400m from Parliament House.

The Russian Federal signed a 99-year lease for the block of land adjacent to Parliament House in 2008, however the country was yet to begin construction of the new embassy, and last week the Albanese government rushed legislation through parliament to end the lease citing national security concerns. The former superpower is challenging the new laws on constitutional grounds, arguing the Commonwealth did not have justified terms for terminating its lease.

“Today’s decision is one taken in the national security interests of Australia,” Mr Albanese said at the time. A man, believed to be a Russian diplomat, is squatting on the site Russia had leased to build its new embassy.
