Russia has successfully launched the second nuclear reactor on its heavy nuclear missile cruiser, Admiral Nakhimov. This marks a significant step towards the ship's operational readiness. The launch was confirmed by a Russian news agency report citing a source within Moscow's defense industry. The cruiser, modernized and upgraded since 1999, is expected to undergo factory sea trials in summer 2025. The upgrades include enhanced strike capabilities with 10 universal ship-based firing systems, each capable of launching 8 Kalibr-NK and/or Oniks cruise missiles.

The report quotes a source in Moscow’s defense industry complex for the development.The physical start-up of the second reactor hints that the nuclear-powered ship is now ready for operations. It was first launched in 1986 as Project 11442, following the modernization and upgrades it has been redesignated as Project 11442M.It is important to mention here that the Kirov class cruiser has been undergoing repairs and upgrades since 1999 at the Sevmash Shipyard. Actual works on the cruiser had been started in 2013.Its return to sea has been delayed several times in the past, mostly due to the complexity of the work involved. China currently has the largest naval fleet in the world, with 730 vessels, followed by Russia with 598, as per a 2023 report.Kirov class is the largest and heaviest surface combatant warships in Moscow’s fleet. Pyotr Veliky is the only Kirov class battlecruiser currently in service with the Russian Navy.Kirov class is also the last nuclear-powered surface combatant in service in the world after the United States retired its last nuclear-powered cruiser in the 1990s.When compared to modern warships, they are second in size only to the large aircraft carriers.The Kirov class cruisers use a combined nuclear and steam propulsion system.
