The 'hyper-violent chase movie' starring Russell Crowe will be the first proper theatrical release of the COVID era. Read rilaws's review:
is a nasty piece of work, jarringly rough but also, in fits and starts, bracing entertainment., looming and glowering as a character who thinks the world has done him wrong and is now exacting his righteous revenge. To Crowe’s credit, he doesn’t bend over backwards trying to get us to see The Man’s side of things.
Everyone from mass shooters with recognizable names to common anonymous Internet trolls are bundled up into Crowe’s hefty frame, and the actor condenses and distills their collective fury with scary determination. This isn’t, an ordinary man who has had enough of the system—there’s no such social sympathy at work in Crowe’s performance. The Man is a spree-killing golem built of many real horrors, but Crowe doesn’t try to explain him.
The trouble is, I’m not entirely certain the movie—particularly Ellsworth’s script—is quite on that same wavelength. There are moments inwhen it seems we are supposed to if not empathize with The Man, at least see how nattering and annoying a world we live in; the constant, impolite drone of atomized existence could drive anyone mad! Yet that observation seems mostly centered on frazzled women.
