Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe is set to star alongside Ethan Hawke in 'The Weight', a new thriller set in a remote labor camp. The film follows Samuel Murphy, who finds himself imprisoned and entangled in a perilous gold smuggling scheme.
. The project hails from Padraic McKinley, who previously worked with Hawke in 2020’s The Good Lord Bird miniseries, and with Crowe in the 2019 show The Loudest Voice.
Besides The Weight, Hawke is currently attached to star in several movies, including Scott Derrickson’s horror sequel The Black Phone 2, Richard Linklater’s music drama Blue Moon, mountain climbing drama Batso with Daniel Radcliffe, and Andrew Stanton’s Beatles movie Revolver with Maya Hawke. Meanwhile, Crowe was most recently seen in last year’s Kraven the Hunter with Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
The Weight will be directed by McKinley from a screenplay written by Shelby Gaines, Matthew Chapman, and Matthew Booi, based on an original story by Booi and Leo Scherman. The project is expected to begin its production sometime this summer. Producers are Simon Fields and Nathan Fields for Fields Entertainment, Ryan Hawke for Under The Influence, Jonas Katzenstein and Maximilian Leo of augenschein, Veronica Ferres for Construction Film, with Ralf Berchtold set as an executive producer.
