Residents in many of the country's rural areas face less than adequate healthcare, with a shortage of specialised and new nurses a significant contributing factor, a new report has found. | YoliswaSobuwa

A new study reports that rural areas dominate the 10 worst-performing districts in maternal and infant healthcare.

According to the report, there needs to be more nurses in rural areas, especially midwives, maternity nurses and paediatric nurses. "The state of primary healthcare viewed through a nursing lens captures the enormity of the impact. In addition to supporting school-health services and home-based care, primary healthcare nurses are responsible for managing chronic diseases, geriatrics, HIV and [sexually-transmitted infections], mother and child health, mental health, minor ailment treatments and tuberculosis."

Provinces with large rural coverage, such as Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and Limpopo, all performed below the average for ideal clinic status.and get matched for a conversationThere is also a need to advocate for increased public healthcare funding for rural provinces, the report recommends.
