Sen. Ben Albritton, the new Florida Senate President, aims to bring more state resources and attention to rural Florida during the upcoming legislative session.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) - There’s a new makeup in the Florida Senate and with it comes a new focus.The diversity starts with leadership on both sides with the minority leader coming from the urban south leader and the senate president coming from rural Florida.“ Rural Florida is full of unrealized potential,” Sen. Ben Albritton , (R) Wauchula, said. Rural Florida can expect to see more state resources over the next two years with Sen.

The Wauchula Republican, who is an agriculture business owner by trade, said there are ways the legislature can help rural parts of the state catch up to the urban areas. “There are ways to increase the efficiency and delivery of healthcare in those spaces you’re increasing the standard, the quality of life,” Sen. Albritton said. Sen. Albritton didn’t lay out specific plans during a media availability on Monday, but he said it starts with paying attention to the needs of those communities. “We will be looking very closely to see how we can do, one important thing by the way, and that is how can we be a partner with rural Florida to increase our quality of life but keep the character of the community,” Sen. Albritton said.While representing urban south Florida, he says the legislature can focus on infrastructure for all Floridians. “It’s been about sanitary sewer lines that are aged and need to be ripped up, repaired and replaced. It’s about a number of my cities still on septic,” Sen. Pizzo, (D) Hollywood, said. So far, there haven’t been many proposals addressing those issues for the upcoming legislative session. However, members are expected to file hundreds more in the coming weeks
