The Australia Institute has revealed the regions that will be the biggest losers from the controversial stage 3 tax cuts, as Anthony Albanese doubles down on the government’s position to the costly tax changes.

Research by The Australia Institute has found those living in rural and regional communities will benefit the least from the final stage of the Morrison government's legislated tax cuts, while those in Australian cities will reap the greatest rewards.

Australia Institute Senior Economist Matt Grudnoff warned the tax cuts would further widen the economic divide between Australian capital cities and rural areas. “The government should scrap or substantially amend the stage 3 tax cuts to tackle economic inequality on a geographic and socio-economic basis.”

At the other end of the spectrum, taxpayers in the top 20 electorates, which includes North Sydney, Wentworth, Curtin and Brisbane, will pay $48 billion less tax.
