Rupert Murdoch has revealed his predictions about the future of the media industry in his first TV interview in more than a decade.

Rupert Murdoch has revealed his predictions about the future of the media in a rare and exclusive sit down with Sky News CEO Paul Whittaker where he shares his thoughts on how long newspapers will be printed and what impact artificial intelligence will have on the publishing industry.

After his father Sir Keith died in 1952, Mr Murdoch took over the family business, News Limited, which was facing financial issues at the time and had one key asset, an Adelaide afternoon publication called The News. His son Lachlan stuck by his father’s side in business for decades and in 2023, Rupert transitioned to a new role of Emeritus Chairman of News Corp and Fox Corp, with Lachlan assuming operational control and becoming sole chair of both companies.

“I don't think there's any doubt … it will put people out of work. When it does, that will create wealth, and that wealth will be devoted to a new industries and new employment,” he said. When it comes to how long it will be before the world sees the last printed newspaper, Mr Murdoch guessed 15 years, “with a lot of luck”.

When asked about what he hoped his legacy would be, he said he hoped his work in the media would be continued.
