A dedicated Reddit user has successfully run PSP games at 60FPS and streamed PC titles via Steam Link on their Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, showcasing the potential of Wear OS devices.
Smartwatches are renowned for their fitness tracking capabilities, notification alerts, and even blood pressure monitoring. However, gaming on these miniature devices is rarely considered a compelling feature. While the Play Store offers a limited selection of simple Wear OS games, the idea of playing console or PC games on a tiny watch screen seems improbable for most users.
But a resourceful and dedicated Reddit user has defied expectations by successfully running PSP games at 60FPS and streaming PC titles via Steam Link on their Samsung Galaxy Watch 5. This unorthodox gaming experiment showcases the extraordinary potential of Wear OS devices when pushed beyond their conventional boundaries.First and foremost, for those unfamiliar, PSP stands for Playstation Portable. This pocket-sized gaming console, launched in 2004, enjoyed a decade-long run before being discontinued in 2014. At the time, the games it offered were truly impressive for such a compact device. However, witnessing them run on a device like the Galaxy Watch 5 is simply astounding. User ZenonDesingk, dissatisfied with the limited gaming options on the Play Store, sought more powerful alternatives. Traditional sideloading methods, such as via Bluetooth or a browser, proved ineffective. That's when they turned to ADB (Android Debug Bridge), utilizing an app called Bugjaeger to transfer APK files from their phone to their smartwatch over Wi-Fi. This ingenious method allowed them to install a PSP emulator, adjusting DPI settings for optimal gameplay. The results were remarkably smooth. Classics like GTA: Vice City, Mortal Kombat, and Need for Speed: Most Wanted ran at approximately 60FPS, with only graphically demanding titles like God of War dipping to 30FPS. But the experiment didn't stop there. ZenonDesingk further challenged themselves by installing Steam Link on the watch and streaming Forza Horizon 4, a full-fledged PC game, directly to their wrist. While the small watch screen presented a significant gameplay obstacle, they employed a Bluetooth gamepad for a more functional experience. Although hardly the most comfortable way to play, this feat highlights the remarkable advancements in technology and the boundless possibilities that emerge when combined with creativity and technical expertise
