The Tokyo Olympics marathon and race-walk events will be held 500 miles north of Japan's capital to beat the heat
TOKYO—The marathon and race-walk events at next year’s Summer Olympics will be held 500 miles north of the host city of Tokyo to avoid the heat of Japan’s capital, the organizers and Tokyo officials said Friday.
A sudden decision last month by the International Olympic Committee to move the events to the northern city of Sapporo prompted an angry response from Tokyo’s governor, Yuriko Koike. Before a meeting of the IOC’s coordination commission for the Games this week, Ms. Koike said the races should remain in Tokyo.
