Runners have been racing around lake for nearly 60 years in beloved Jersey Shore tradition

The final race of this year's Lake Takanassee Summer Series is Monday.

For decades, runners have been circling a coastal lake in one of New Jersey’s oldest and most unusual running events.in Long Branch predates the “running boom” of the 1970s that popularized road running. Starting in 1964, runners began 5K races on Monday evenings that include four loops on the streets surrounding the lake.
