Universal Pictures is adapting the popular Ruiner video game into a movie, with The Maze Runner's Wes Ball having been tapped to direct.
Developed by Reikon Games, Ruiner was initially released in September 2017. The twin-stick shooter video game takes place in the year 2901 in a futuristic cyberpunk city called Rengkok.
“The game follows a wired psychopath who fights against a corrupt system to uncover the truth and retrieve his kidnapped brother,” the official synopsis for the game reads. “Under the guidance of a mysterious hacker, he battles through a world of brutal violence and cutting-edge technology, inching closer to the dark secrets hidden within the city’s neon-lit streets.”is attached to direct the Ruiner movie.
Ball is also attached to direct a live-action Legend of Zelda movie for Nintendo and Sony Pictures. The film does not yet have a release date at this time.The screenplay is being written by Michael Arlen Ross, who penned the script for David Yarovesky’s upcoming movie, Locked, which stars Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins, among others.
Producers for the movie include Kelly McCormick and David Leitch for 87North, Dmitri M. Johnson and Mike Goldberg for Story Kitchen, and Ball and Joe Hartwick Jr. for Oddball. Timothy I. Stevenson, Dan Jevons, Marek Roefler, Magdalena Tomkowicz, and Jakub Stylinski serve as executive producers.
