A trial to determine if Rudy Giuliani must forfeit his assets to satisfy a defamation judgment against him has been postponed. The former New York City mayor failed to appear in court, leading to the adjournment. The trial will focus on whether Giuliani can retain his Florida condo and three World Series rings.

A trial to determine whether Rudy Giuliani must forfeit his Florida condominium and three World Series rings to satisfy a $148 million defamation judgment was postponed Thursday for undisclosed reasons. The former New York City mayor failed to appear in court to testify.

The hearing, conducted without a jury, was scheduled to commence Thursday morning at a federal court in Manhattan to resolve whether Giuliani must surrender the assets to two former Georgia election workers who secured the judgment against him. Judge Lewis J. Liman adjourned the proceedings until Tuesday. Giuliani, 80, was slated to testify before the same judge who last week found him in contempt for failing to disclose information regarding some of his assets to the women's lawyers. As a consequence, Judge Liman prohibited Giuliani from presenting certain evidence. The former mayor, who briefly served as personal counsel to President-elect Donald Trump during his first term, was also found in contempt last week in Washington, D.C. A judge there determined that Giuliani persisted in defaming the election workers by reiterating false allegations that they engaged in fraudulent vote counting during the 2020 presidential election.During the adjournment, Giuliani posted a video on social media featuring a dog named Vinny on the grounds of Trump's Palm Beach, Florida estate. The video stated that the dog 'loves hanging out at Mar-a-Lago' but is 'ready to spend a lot more time in Washington, D.C.,' in support of Trump. The recording's date of creation remains unclear. The upcoming proceeding will not re-litigate whether Giuliani defamed the women or the amount of the judgment against him, both of which have been settled. Instead, it will focus on determining whether he retains ownership of certain valuable assets or must relinquish them. Among these assets is his condominium in Palm Beach, Florida, which he can retain if he proves it is his homestead. The former mayor claims to have established residence there in January 2024, but lawyers representing the election workers assert that he continued to operate as if his New York apartment was his primary residence until its surrender in the fall as part of the judgment. At a recent hearing, Giuliani stated that he is 'not impoverished' but lacks access to most of his remaining assets. 'Everything I have is tied up. I don't have a car. I don't have a credit card. I don't have cash. I can't get to bank accounts that truly would be mine because they have put ... stop orders on, for example, my Social Security account, which they have no right to do,' he claimed. Lawyers for the election workers contend that Giuliani listed the Manhattan apartment as his residence and the rings as his property when he filed for bankruptcy in December 2023, an application subsequently dismissed six months later by a judge who accused him of 'uncooperative conduct,' self-dealing, and a lack of transparency. Giuliani revealed during a deposition last month that George Steinbrenner, the late New York Yankees owner, presented him with the rings in 2002, although he insisted on paying for them and told Steinbrenner: 'These are for Andrew.' He testified that he immediately gave one to Andrew and kept three others for safekeeping. He estimated their total value at $27,000. Lawyers for the election workers argue that Giuliani, a lifelong Yankees fan who occasionally wore the rings, never recorded them as a gift to his son in tax documents, despite being meticulous about listing gifts when filing taxes. They further assert that the son never obtained insurance for the rings or reported them in his own tax records.Giuliani's total assets are anticipated to be no more than $10 million. The Palm Beach condominium is believed to be worth over $3 million. He has already relinquished a New York apartment valued at approximately $5 million, a 1980 Mercedes once owned by movie star Lauren Bacall, numerous luxury watches, and other assets. The election workers, Ruby Freeman and her daughter, Wandrea 'Shaye' Moss, obtained the defamation judgment after alleging that Giuliani's lies about the 2020 presidential election being stolen resulted in death threats that instilled fear for their lives
