Rudy Giuliani, former attorney to Donald Trump, has been found in contempt of court for not complying with a court order to pay $148 million in damages to two former Georgia election workers he defamed.
A judge on Monday found Rudy Giuliani in contempt of court for failing to turn over assets as part of a judgment to two former Georgia election workers. Giuliani, a former attorney for President-elect Donald Trump and also former mayor of New York City, has faced legal and financial strife in recent years. He's been accused of involvement in attempts to overturn Trump's 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden.
Giuliani, 80, was found liable last year for defaming two former Georgia election workers—Ruby Freeman and her daughter Wandrea 'Shaye' Moss—after falsely accusing them of ballot tampering during the election. He was ordered to pay them $148 million in damages. U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman ruled after Giuliani testified for a second day at a contempt hearing called after lawyers for Freeman and Moss said he had not complied with evidence production requests over the last few months. On Friday, attorneys for Freeman and Moss accused the former mayor of having a 'consistent pattern of willful defiance' in responding to orders to hand over assets as part of the judgment, reported The Associated Press (AP)
