Nvidia's RTX 5090 is set to be the company's most powerful GPU yet, but a new test reveals the crucial role of DLSS in achieving playable frame rates in demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077.
Nvidia is renowned for producing some of the finest graphics cards, but its Deep Learning Super Sampling ( DLSS ) technology has become increasingly crucial to their exceptional performance. This is strikingly evident in a recent test of the RTX 5090 gaming card, where the formidable flagship struggled to maintain an average of 30 frames per second (fps) in Cyberpunk 2077 at maximum settings when DLSS was disabled.
YouTuber PC Centric got a brief opportunity to test the RTX 5090 at CES 2025, and while the GPU effortlessly handled 4K gameplay at maximum settings with ray tracing enabled, this feat was solely achievable with DLSS in operation. The test served as a powerful demonstration of Nvidia's upcoming multi-frame generation capabilities. With DLSS 4 and 4x frame generation activated, along with DLSS set to Performance mode, the RTX 5090 achieved an impressive 290 fps and over 40ms of latency. This was accomplished using Nvidia's Reflex 1, as Reflex 2 was unavailable for this test. Switching from Performance to Quality mode noticeably reduced the frame rates, averaging around 200 fps with slightly higher latency. Even so, 200 fps surpasses the requirements of most gamers in a title like Cyberpunk 2077, which is not an esports game.As noted by NotebookCheck, reducing the frame generation from 4x to 2x had a minimal impact on latency. Eliminating DLSS entirely exposed the raw performance of the RTX 5090 without any enhancements, revealing a less favorable outcome. Disabling frame generation resulted in approximately 65 fps, while completely disabling DLSS caused the RTX 5090 to fall short of even 30 fps. This falls considerably below console-level performance and approaches the realm of unplayable. This doesn't imply that the RTX 5090 will be a subpar GPU. On the contrary, it's poised to be Nvidia's most powerful offering, surpassing its predecessor by a significant margin. However, the stark difference in frame rates underscores the crucial role of frame generation in contemporary AAA games. Cyberpunk 2077 with ray tracing at 4K presents a formidable challenge for even the most advanced hardware. Whether due to game optimization or a shift in GPU manufacturing paradigms, likely both, frame generation is increasingly becoming indispensable. The RTX 5090 was also observed in leaked benchmarks, providing insights into raw rasterization improvements. As reported by VideoCardz, the card was tested in Vulkan, where it demonstrated up to 37% faster performance compared to the RTX 4090. Conversely, the RTX 5090 performed less favorably in the OpenCL test, showing up to 15% faster speeds. As always, it's crucial to remember that benchmark results should be interpreted with caution. A comprehensive understanding will emerge only after full reviews of the card are published and it becomes commercially available, which is expected by January 30th at the latest.
