An RTD light rail train derailed in Aurora on Wednesday at the same site as a 2019 incident.
Three people were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Aurora Fire Rescue.
No other vehicles were involved in the incident, which shut down the busy intersection of motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic, police said. Emergency responders assessed 24 people at the scene.“We will investigate the cause,” said Christina Zazueta, an RTD spokeswoman.In January 2019, a light-rail train derailed there and a woman, a passenger thrown from the train through a dislodged door, had her foot severed in the incident. There is a 90-degree curve in the track at the intersection.
In the 2019 incident, investigators determined that the R-Line train was going 38 mph as it went into the curve and had slowed only to 32 mph when “the right train wheels came off the track.”Shuttle buses were in place on the R-Line on Wednesday because of the incident. Trains will run between Lincoln Station to Florida Station and between Peoria Station and 13th Avenue Station, while a bus bridge connects the two rail segments.
Police said the intersection likely will be closed through the night and that Chambers Road and Abilene Street are alternative traffic routes in the area.
