The RSPCA is urging millions of dog and cat owners to act now to keep their pets safe as sub-zero temperatures are set to sweep the UK over the coming days
With the mercury plummeting, and schools across the country closed, the RSPCA is making an urgent call to pet owners everywhere to take extra precautions in safeguarding their furry friends. The charity emphasizes the critical need for action as arctic conditions sweep through the UK.
With cold weather alerts expected to continue throughout the week and forecasts of snow and icy temperatures, it's vital to keep pets protected. Speaking to the ECHO, RSPCA inspectorate commissioner Dermot Murphy said: "It's really important we help our animal friends get through the chilly weather, and we've got lots of helpful advice and tips available for people to make sure their own pets, and local wildlife, are kept safe.
During frosty months, antifreeze and rock salt become widespread hazards to unaware animals due to their toxic nature. Pet owners must ensure these substances stay well beyond the reach of inquisitive snouts. Should your pet consume something harmful, contact with a vet should be immediate. Additionally, any pets exposed to cold or damp conditions should be dried with a towel, and provided with abundant warm bedding to snuggle into.
The RSPCA also shares further guidance for dog caretakers during this nippy time:, reports the Liverpool Echo. Mr. Murphy emphasized: "We don't advise keeping dogs outside in any weather. Meeting the needs of dogs when they're kept outside is very hard, and more so in very low temperatures." Instead, the recommendation is to welcome pups indoors. However, if housing dogs inside isn't feasible, they must always have access to a sheltered space equipped with clean, cozy, and dry bedding, alongside a dependable heat source ensuring temperatures never plunge below 10C.
