Great horned owls have spread all over Saskatchewan and a new research project is looking at how the birds have adapted to a changing world.

The great horned owl, specifically, is more than a beautiful example of the Strigidae family — it is an example of how nature can adapt to human-altered landscapes. Now the Royal Saskatchewan Museum is embarking on a year-long study to document where the owls nest across the province and how they have adapted.

“You can find it at the northernmost border of Saskatchewan, and the southernmost border and the eastern and westernmost borders,” he said.Great horned owls are the most numerous owl in Saskatchewan. The birds will nest in shelterbelts, abandoned barns and structures, farmyard trees or high up and secluded locations in a big city. That means that their footprint in Saskatchewan has expanded from the time of European settlement to now.

“This is really different from a lot of other critters out there that we know don’t respond very well to changes in the landscape. And so that’s why we’re studying great horned owls,” said Fisher. Ryan Fisher, a curator with the Royal Saskatchewan Museum is working on a research project with horned owls.Fisher says the owls are big “charismatic critters,” and hopes people will eagerly report their sightings. Ato collect the bulk data coming from citizen scientists.
