Vice-Admiral Sir Henry Kellett, from Tipperary, led Arctic expeditions to search for the lost ships.

The rare polar sledge flag of a "proud Irishman" and notable 19th Century naval officer has been saved for the UK.

The flag is made of green silk and embroidered with an Irish harp in golden thread to reflect Kellett's Irish heritage.Image caption,It was made possible with help from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Art Fund. The expedition's disappearance shortly after became one of the great mysteries of the age of Victorian exploration.
