Roy Manning, a former Michigan linebacker and NFL veteran, has been appointed as the new defensive edge rushers coach at San Diego State University. Manning brings extensive experience, having coached linebackers and cornerbacks at various prominent college programs, including Michigan, Washington State, UCLA, USC, and Oklahoma. He most recently served as outside linebackers coach and assistant defensive head coach at USC.

San Diego State is filling its opening for a defensive edge rushers coach with a veteran assistant who has worked on the staffs of five major college programs. Joining SDSU ’s program, according to a source, is Roy Manning , a former Michigan linebacker who played three seasons in the NFL. Manning is regarded as a strong recruiter as well as for his coaching abilities. Manning, 43, replaces Rob Aurich as the Aztecs’ edges coach.

Aurich switched to linebackers coach last month when he was promoted to SDSU defensive coordinator after Eric Schmidt left to become head coach at North Dakota. Manning began his coaching career as running backs coach at Cincinnati in 2012, but has been on the defensive side of the ball ever since. He coached linebackers at Michigan, Washington State, UCLA and USC and cornerbacks at Michigan and Oklahoma. Manning most recently served at USC during the 2022-23 seasons as outside linebackers coach and assistant defensive head coach after following USC head coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma. Manning left the Trojans staff last January amid a shake-up on the defensive staff. His last game with USC came in the 2023 Holiday Bowl against Louisville. He also was on the sidelines for the 2016 and 2017 Holiday Bowls as a member of Mike Leach’s Washington State staff. Manning’s coaching career at Michigan came during the 2011-14 seasons, when former SDSU head coach Brady Hoke was head coach for the Wolverines. Manning was a linebacker at Michigan from 2001-04 before spending three years with four teams (Green Bay, Houston, Buffalo and Jacksonville) in the NFL
