The Roy City Fire Chief issued a statement after an employee was charged with aggravated sexual abuse of a child. Ryan J. Rampton, 58, of Syracuse, was charged with two counts of first-degree felony aggravated sexual abuse of a child and one count of first-degree felony sodomy of a child.
"While I cannot share details due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, I want to reaffirm the values and standards that define our department," Chief Theron Williams said."The employee in question was hired three years ago, prior to my tenure," Williams said. "While I cannot speak to the hiring process at that time, I can assure you that this employee would not have been hired had any criminal record or prior misconduct been known." "Our firefighters are among the most dedicated public servants in the state, and we remain proud of their service to our community," he added.As your Fire Chief, I want to address a recent matter involving one of our employees who has been arrested and is currently under investigation for alleged misconduct. We want to be absolutely clear: this incident does not reflect the values, integrity, or professionalism of the Roy City Fire Department. Our firefighters are among the most dedicated public servants in the state, and we remain proud of their service to our community. The Roy City Fire Department has a long-standing reputation for excellence, and we stand firmly behind the men and women who serve with courage, skill, and compassion every day. We ask the public and media to recognize that this isolated incident does not define our department or its mission. The conduct and allegations in question are deeply troubling and wholly inconsistent with our standards. As of Friday, October 24th, the employee has resigned from the Roy City Fire Department. A firefighter is more than a first responder; they are a symbol of courage, integrity, and service. The character of a firefighter is built upon a foundation of values that uphold the highest standards of public trust. Firefighters are held to a strict moral code and are expected to act with honesty, fairness, and transparency both on and off duty. I stand before you today to defend the honorable men and women who embody what it truly means to be a firefighter. Those who fall short of these values do not deserve to stand among the great ones who have earned the public’s trust through their actions and integrity. This situation has profoundly affected not only our department but also the trust and confidence of our city and community. We understand that some members of the public have expressed concern and disappointment. These concerns are taken seriously and are committed to rebuilding trust through transparency, accountability, and continued service to our community. We are entrusted with a profound responsibility to protect lives, property, and the well-being of our community. That trust is sacred; it demands that we uphold the highest ethical and professional standards at all times. Roy City’s current hiring practices are thorough and designed to ensure the highest character, integrity, and competence of every firefighter we bring on board. We had no prior knowledge of these allegations until we were notified by outside authorities of the investigation.
