Roxbury Elementary reopened Jan. 8, bringing students and staff back to their home building following a fall-long relocation to Parkside Church.

SOLON , Ohio - Roxbury Elementary School reopened Jan. 8 after a four-month closure caused by asbestos abatement and reconstruction work.following a fall-long relocation to Parkside Church in Chagrin Falls.

After final environmental testing cleared the building for occupancy, Roxbury’s Rockets walked back through the school’s doors Jan. 8, greeted by teachers who spent the past two days unpacking, reorganizing and restoring classrooms that had been stripped down during asbestos abatement in the school’s north wing. District officials confirmed this week that all approvals have been secured, including clearance from the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, allowing full re-entry into the building. The district posted final environmental test results to its Roxbury Environmental Issue Hub for public review. The reopening brings closure to a project that began in the fall after elevated asbestos concerns were discovered in Roxbury’s north wing, triggering the removal of ceilings, lighting, carpeting and thousands of classroom materials so they could be cleaned, scanned and preserved. During the relocation, Roxbury’s entire school community operated out of Parkside Church in Chagrin Falls. Students continued their regular school schedule there, including fundraisers, seasonal activities and outdoor lunches, even while their home building underwent a major overhaul. Over winter break, reconstruction crews installed new ceilings, LED lighting and new flooring throughout the affected areas. Furniture and materials that had been stored and cleaned in the gym were moved back into classrooms earlier this week so teachers could begin rebuilding their learning spaces.“These walls, these classrooms, these hallways—this is home,” Bolden wrote in a message to families. “And after the last four months, being back here feels especially meaningful. Because despite the change in location, the most important part of our school never moved.” Teachers spent several days sorting supplies, rebuilding classroom libraries, setting up learning stations and preparing student materials ahead of the first day back. Photos from inside the building show staff unpacking bins, organizing math and reading kits and stacking newly delivered materials in rooms filled once again with student desks. To keep the reopening smooth, the district asked families to follow new drop-off procedures and encouraged bus riders to use transportation so students could be escorted directly into the building by staff stationed along the front walkway. Bolden also thanked the Parkside Church community for hosting Roxbury students and staff throughout the relocation, along with families and the Roxbury PTA for maintaining school programs and activities during the disruption. Earlier in the project, district leaders worked alongside the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the Cleveland Department of Public Health’s Division of Air Quality to monitor abatement work and verify that the building met safety standards before reopening.years later. That risk was the driving force behind the decision to fully remove contaminated materials and rebuild affected areas rather than rely on surface-level cleaning.“Tomorrow marks an exciting milestone for our Roxbury community,” Bolden wrote. “We can’t wait to see our Rockets walk through the school doors in the morning. Welcome home, Roxbury.”
