Routh’s court-appointed lawyers told Judge Aileen Cannon, who presided over the Mar-a-Lago classified documents case, they were not even close to being ready for the trial, which was slated to begin in February. They argued that prosecutors gathered– and that so much of that evidence is technical – that they are struggling to review it in a timely manner.
Among the items collected by investigators and expected to be used by prosecutors include 17 cell phones, reportedly taken from his car and the homes where Routh has lived. The defense contended that there is too much to sift through before the current trial date. They urged Cannon to push the trial back to December 2025.During the hearing, Cannon seemed amenable to delaying the trial, but likely not for the ten months the defense is seeking. She is expected to rule on a revised schedule soon.
Prosecutors, meanwhile, tried to use Wednesday’s pre-trial hearing to learn if Routh would use an insanity defense; however, they were rebuffed when his attorneys indicated they were not ready to disclose their strategy at this time.Routh, 58, is accused of lying in wait for 12 hours on the perimeter of Trump International Golf Club on September 15 before a U.S. Secret Service agent spotted a rifle poking through the fence.
