Warriors defense posts seventh shutout of the season with 54-0 win at Kearny, as TonTon Drobny intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble
Army-Navy is a small, all-boys boarding school in Carlsbad. Student enrollment for 7th through 12th grades: 250. It has been 43 years since the Warriors celebrated a San Diego Section football championship.
Friday night, Army-Navy’s march through a special season continued with a 54-0 win at Kearny, dousing cold water on the Komets’ homecoming. The Warriors are now 7-1, all seven wins coming via shutout.The Warriors have outscored their opponents 291-13. Against the Komets , Army-Navy forced more turnovers than it allowed first downs . About that defense, head coach Nehemiah Brunson said, “That’s the way we teach them. Fly around, cause havoc. They’re doing it. We’ve got two lock-down corners that hold it down for us and a defensive line that just gets after it.” Army-Navy blew out the game with a 34-point third quarter, 21 of the points coming in the first 2 minutes, 5 seconds. Sophomore QB Carlos Ramirez finished 7 of 12 for 152 yards and two TDs. The Warriors had 324 yards in total offense. But the story of the game and the season thus far is that defense and the seven shutouts. TonTon Drobny intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble. The leader of the defense is tackle Ratumana Bulabalavu, who is listed at 6-foot-5, 255 pounds. On the same day he received his first Division I scholarship offer , Bulabalavu registered two sacks against Kearny, giving him 17 for the season.Jokingly asked what he has against quarterbacks, Bulabalavu said, “I like playing and taking pride in what I do, and getting sacks is something that gives me a lot of pride. It’s nothing against quarterbacks. I have all respect for them. That’s a hard job.” The Warriors figure to be good for some time. Of the 33 players on the roster, 19 are underclassmen with 12 of them starters. As for chasing that first section title in 43 years, Bronson said. “If they keep playing the way they’re playing, I think we’ll be OK.”Madison continued its march toward an Oct. 28 showdown with No. 2 Lincoln by routing the Saints. The Warhawks have yet to allow more than 14 points in a game and have scored 35 or more points six times. Saints fell to 3-6, 1-2.Lincoln was dominant in all three phases. The Hornets intercepted four passes, blocked a punt and scored 49 points. K.J. Chatham completed 9 of 14 passes for 183 yards and two TDs. Donald Reed III scored two TDs. Corey Thompson-Miller caught two passes for 108 yards and a TD. Chris White recovered a fumble for a score. Scripps fell to 2-6, 0-2.Carlsbad QB Julian Sayin was nearly perfect, completing 16 of 18 passes for 232 yards and five TDs. TE Zack Marshall had seven receptions for 108 yards and three scores. The Lancers also rushed 30 times for 187 yards. The defense was dominating with Thomas McCormick intercepting a pass. Carlsbad has won six in a row. Oceanside falls to 0-8, 0-5.Conner Rath, Luke Gonzalez and Dylan Curry took turns scoring for Poway. Rath ran for two TDs, Gonzalez also ran for two TDs and Curry hit WR Makai Herrero for a pair of TDs for Poway , which has now outscored opponents 265-77. Westview is 1-7, 1-2.In a Grossmont Hills League game, Ryland Jessee passed for five TDs for Helix . Kevin Allen III rushed for two TDs and caught one of the TD passes from Jessee. Jackson Daniels had TD receptions of 50 and 45 yards. Shon Martin and Kyyza Matovu also caught a TD pass. Walker Laub connected with Dorian Kiersey for the Scotties’ final score. Major Givens had a 30-yard TD run for Steele Canyon and Johnathan Sablan rushed for a score, while teammate Jacob Azevedo had an interception return for a TD.Parlan Sanders threw a 50-yard TD pass to Colin Riley, Nico Tomasello had a 25-yard TD run, Max Turner had a 1-yard TD run, and Easton Peterson had interception returns of 33 and 28 yards for TDs all in the first quarter of the Grossmont Hills game. Peterson has six interceptions this season. Zak Darling added a 60-yard TD run, while Josh Zander had a 25-yard TD reception from Tomasello and Davion Green had a 27-yard TD run for Granite Hills .For the fourth straight week, Mater Dei Catholic posted a shutout to even its record after starting with an especially tough schedule. Dominic Nankil passed for 236 yards and four TDs in addition to rushing for one. D.J. Overstreet had a 66-yard punt return for a score. Anthony Lopez led the defense with an interception for a TD and seven tackles. The Crusaders have outscored their last four opponents 177-0. Otay Ranch had its three-game winning streak snapped.Zuriel Eatmon scored on runs of 73 and 38 yards for El Camino and finished with seven carries for 150 yards. Devin Cerda-Johnson had a 2-yard TD run and QB Carson Howard scored on a 1-yard sneak. Pedro Fiuza had a 29-yard FG. Ryan Speltz had a pair of interceptions and Caleb Reese had one. The El Camino defense had five sacks and three interceptions. San Marcos falls to 4-4, 1-3.Mission Hills won its third straight with Santiago Salas scoring on TD runs of 6 and 18 yards. QB Keeton Smith and Curtis Johnson hooked up for a 13-yard TD. Johnny Reyes had a 39-yard FG and Gabe Faulkner had an interception. Dougie Jutronich scored for Torrey Pines . Dawson Washington had nine tackles and Kade Wilken had six tackles, one for loss.In a contrast of styles, San Diego’s ground game outlasted Henry’s passing attack as the Cavers outlasted the Patriots. The Cavers scored five rushing TDs and Damien Whitfield intercepted two passes. Charlie Berkley and Curtis Rodgers each had two TDs for San Diego. QB Malachi Ghitman completed 18 of 35 for 183 yards and three TDs for Henry . Vincent Li caught five passes for 107 yards.Manny Adeiza intercepted two first-half passes, including one he returned 62 yards for the go-ahead TD as San Pasqual remained in the chase for first place in the Valley League by subduing defending league champion Ramona . RB Noah Snyder rushed for 110 yards on 14 carries, including a 65-yard TD run on San Pasqual’s third play from scrimmage. Christian Savino kicked a pair of FGs and the defense stopped Ramona on five fourth-down plays. Bulldogs WR Jamil Kassab caught nine passes for 94 yards, but Ramona was held scoreless for the final 3½ quarters.Fallbrook junior RBs Chris Bausch and Alan Leon combined for six TDs. Bausch rushed 14 times for 162 yards and three scores. Leon carried six times for 99 and three TDs. QB Evan Thomas completed all six of his passes for 69 yards and a score as the Warriors had 441 yards total offense. Kaleb Collings had a pair of sacks, forced a fumble and caught a TD pass. Sean Farish had a pair of sacks, forced a fumble and recovered one. Escondido falls to 3-6, 0-4.QB Ignacio Mondragon accounted for 144 total yards and as well as a TD passing and rushing to lead Montgomery over Olympian . Jordan Benton had a 70-yard punt return for the Aztecs in addition to grabbing a pair of passes for 61 yards. Arath Leyva, who had seven tackles, and Gideon Baraka, eight tackles, led the defense. Olympian’s Javon Jordan caught five passes for 75 yards and Ceejay Clavier had seven tackles.QB Jorge Garcia completed 8 of 13 passes for 193 yards and two TDs, one of 65 yards to Angelo Zapata, as Hilltop opened league play with a win. Isaac Meza caught four passes for 76 yards and Ty Washington rushed for a pair of scores. Sweetwater suffered its third consecutive loss.Keeping the ball on the ground, Castle Park topped San Ysidro . Jeremiah Simler gained 130 yards on 14 carries with a TD, Ladell Hampton added 151 yards on 16 carries and Jalen Hopkins rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries, scoring once, as the Trojans gained 380 yards on the ground.Aleks Wojcik was 13 of 22 passing for 374 yards and five TDs as Mar Vista blanked visiting Southwest . Elijah Clark caught five passes for 243 yards and three TDs. The defense was credited with 11 sacks, six tackles for loss and a pair of fumble recoveries as Gilbert Solis led the way with five sacks and a fumble recovery. Southwest dropped its third straight game.Facing Metro Conference teams and getting healthy have proven an elixir for Eastlake as the Titans won their second straight in the Mesa League opener at home. Bonita Vista was led by Caden Ada, who gained 84 yards on 15 carries rushing, and junior Diego Bustamante, who recovered two fumbles.Parker RB Chris Williams, who also plays QB, rushed 28 times for 202 yards and a TD as the Lancers took over first place in the league. Williams also kicked three PATs and a 25-yard FG while also recovering his own onside kick and intercepting a pass for the Lancers . Classical led 14-13 at halftime behind RB Life Pollard, who carried 12 times for 71 yards and a 49-yard TD.Kal-El Gordon rushed for 228 yards and scored four TDs as El Cajon Valley won a third league game for the first time in 17 years. Darick Dubose rushed for 98 yards and scored two TDs for the Braves. Paris Dixon had an interception return for a TD for El Cajon Valley, while Yasir Blair had three sacks and Chris Cosio had two interceptions. Jeremiah Castillo scored three TDs for Mount Miguel . Antrell Burbidge added a 2-yard TD run, while teammate Davian McGowan had an 11-yard TD reception.Angel Diaz rushed for 121 yards and four TDs for El Capitan . Jaylin Padilla caught a 15-yard TD pass from Brandt Barker to open the scoring. Bruce Newland also rushed for a TD. Austin Cordeiro and Chance LaChappa had interceptions. Aden Ramirez kicked a 39-yard FG. Valhalla fell to 0-8, 0-4.West Hills led 35-0 and improved to 6-2, 4-0. Collin Dill passed for two TDs and ran for another, while Nate Stevens rushed for a TD. Dylan Smith and Alexander Grubbs had the receiving TDs. Also for the Pack, Sam Oberg return an interception 30 yards for a TD and Tyler Haley kicked a 44-yard FG. Jaiden Ellison had a 31-yard TD run, Matthew Felix, who had 119 rushing yards added a 9-yard TD run, and Diego Peguero threw a 14-yard TD pass to Sebastian Pitoau for Monte Vista .QB Josh Thompson was 8 for 9 passing for 155 yards and a TD to Toryn Sellars, who caught four passes for 77 yards as Rancho Bernardo kept pace with Poway in the league standings with a ninth consecutive win over Mt. Carmel , retaining the Rotary Cup. Jack Engblom led Rancho Bernardo’s defense with seven tackles.After losing the first six meetings with Vista, Del Norte has now won two consecutive games from the Panthers .Mission Bay’s Ethan Silber threw for five TDs and rushed for another as the Buccaneers improved to 6-2, 1-1. Silber’s TDs covered 9, 4, 7, 56 and 12 yards. David Maier caught three TD passes and Jack Ryan grabbed two. Jonah Priest intercepted a pass to preserve the win in OT. Canyon Hills is 1-6, 0-3.Hamadi Sharif scored on a 13-yard TD run with 59 seconds left in the first half to give the Colts a 10-7 lead at the break, while the Colts’ Angel Reynosa made FGs of 33 and 38 yards, as Crawford won a key league game over Coronado . Graham Bower completed a pass to Logan Eastlick for a 13-yard TD on the Islanders’ first drive of the game.Hoover ended a two-game losing streak that saw the Cardinals give up 82 points. Sir Autry had 19 carries for 229 yards and two TDs Hoover. Hoover has recorded its most wins since the 2014 team went 10-3. Clairemont is 3-6, 0-3.Santa Fe Christian rolled to a 32-6 halftime lead and cruised home. Orange Glen falls to 0-8, 0-1.La Costa Canyon blocked a pair of punts with both resulting in TDs. Cooper Mau blocked the first with Seven McGrath recovering for the score. Cooper Atherton recovered the second after Valley Center kicked the ball off its own man. Andrew Maes and Jack Splavek scored rushing TDs for LCC, which led 27-0 at one point and played all 71 on its roster.Bishop’s rolled up 332 yards total offense — 188 passing. Xavier Rodriguez scored on runs of 3 and 5 yards while Raynall Thornton scored on runs of 31 and 7 yards. Tayshawn Taylor scored on a 4-yard run, Thornton had four carries for 58 yards and caught four passes for 78. QB Will Fierro completed 12 of 17 for 188 yards. Tyler Boynton had a pair of sacks and had the clearing block on Thornton’s 31-yard TD run. Escondido Charter had just 109 yards total offense — 30 rushing.
