What does seem non-nonsensical is the notion that anxious people—whether self-isolating or not—gravitate toward comfort, and society at large has entered an anxious season likely to carry on for a while.

A pair of skinny scuba double-knit pants, slit at the ankle, have the ease of lockdown leggings, but they’re chic enough for whatever world emerges from the current craziness; ditto a cape-sleeve shift and matching culotte in stretchy camel-colored cady, or an asymmetric color-block tee and mid-calf wrap skirt in ultra-pliant jersey. The accent on chic feels optimistic—these are clothes for women who haven’t, you know, given up.
