“The biggest thing for me is that he doesn’t only talk to pitchers,” Taillon said. “He talks to hitters probably the same amount, or more.”
“I first noticed it when he would hang a little bit closer to the coaching side of the dugout,” Hinch said. “Players have an uncanny consistency in creating some distance from the coaches’ area. Gerrit didn’t. He would sit down on the chairs with us. He would stand behind us. First, he was really quiet. Then he started asking some in-game strategy stuff. And it grew from there.”
Rizzo, Wilkerson and Blake all smiled when making those comments. Blake said because Cole talks so frequently to his teammates, the Yankees need to somewhat monitor the conversations, ensuring the right messages are channeled at the right time. But everyone agrees Cole cares only about the greater good.
Hinch said his conversations with Cole were “never intrusive, never combative.” Boone said he and Cole occasionally will “have it out on certain things,” but both realize they’re working toward the same goal, making the Yankees as good as they can be.“I may say that to him jokingly. But I welcome it all. I want more. I love it,” Boone said. “I’ve learned a ton from him. I enjoy being around him. And I enjoy his love for the game.
