The second annual Dallas Entertainment Awards celebrated the vibrant music scene of Big D. Rosegarden Funeral Party emerged as the evening's big winner, sweeping awards for Artist of the Year, Best Rock Song, Best Music Video, Best Rock Vocalist, and Best Drummer.

The second annual Dallas Entertainment Awards , a sweeping celebration of Big D nightlife, took over the Studio at the Factory, quickly filling to a 900-person capacity. Rockers, rappers, drag queens, bartenders and assorted scenesters, many decked out in the “ Cowboy Glam ” dress code of sequins, fringe and cowboy hats, converged on the venue. Dallas singer Dezman Lehman, aka Dezi 5, emceed the event, created last year to fill the void left by the Dallas Observer Music Awards.

The Dallas Entertainment Awards boasted a whopping 93 categories, nominated and voted on by the public, ranging from album of the year to best door person. Lehman, playing ringmaster to nearly 100 awards over three-plus hours with a dozen live performances, kept the energy high. The top awards were given Oscars-style: Presenters read the nominees, the envelope was opened, and the winner made a speech. The rest were dispatched quickly, presenters simply announcing the winner as their name flashed on a screen. The joy of the show was the sampler plate of music. The gothy post-punk of Rosegarden Funeral Party, the impressive slide-into-falsetto of indie singer-songwriter Sam Cormier, the swagger of country artist Kameron Ross, the hip-hop block party of Cure for Paranoia with We Them Grays and The Institute. There is no “Dallas sound,” which means the city can be tricky to categorize and therefore promote. The upside is, anyone can play. Rosegarden Funeral Party was the evening’s big winner, nabbing artist of the year, best rock song (”Doorway Ghost”) and music video of the year (”Doorway Ghost”), as well as individual awards for best rock vocalist for the band’s frontwoman, Leah Lane, and best drummer for Dean Adams. The onstage vibe kept shifting. Funk, Spanish-language pop, drag performers. After stripping down from a religious frock to a red-sequined vest and fringed white jacket, drag king Buck Wylde pointed an air cannon at the audience and started shooting out — what, exactly? Rice Krispie treats? Blond brownies? I never could figure it out. I saw a woman catch one, snap a picture with her phone and then eat it. Buck Wylde won the award for best drag king for the second time. “We will not live in fear,” Wylde told the audience, to robust cheers. “So stay visible.”Double winners for the evening included Remy Reilly for best pop vocalist and best Americana act and Gracen Wynn for best pop song (”Stop the Car”) and best pop act. Astrogiirl, who won for best new artist and best R&B song (“What They Want”), thanked her mom from the stage, and her mom waved as she filmed on her phone. He was one of the few winners unable to attend the ceremony, feeling under the weather. Walker has been on a health roller coaster since a colon cancer diagnosis a little over a year ago.
