Bands will represent such sites around the globe as Taiwan, China, Japan, Italy, Mexico and Panama
as well as such familiar places as Los Angeles, Long Beach and , well, Pasadena. Bands will also trek in from around the nation, from such places as Texas, Georgia, Iowa, Arizona, Michigan and Virginia.
The parade lineup will include at least six first-time bands, as well as many longtime stalwarts, including the Los Angeles Unified School District All District High School Honor Band, the Pasadena City College Herald Trumpets, the PCC Tournament of Roses Honor Band and the Long Beach-based The Salvation Army Tournament of Roses Band.
Bands are selected by a volunteer panel, which assesses musicianship, marching ability and entertainment value.Two bands must wait for their official invitation until December, when the teams will be determined for the 109th Rose Bowl Game.Banda de Música La Primavera, Santiago, Veraguas, Panamá;Foothills Falcon Band, Tucson, Ariz.;Pasadena City College Herald Trumpets;Rockford High School Marching Band, Rockford, Mich.
The next Rose Parade will be one of the few staged on Jan. 2, because of the event’s longstanding “never on Sunday” rule. The tradition dates back to 1893, when officials moved the annual march back a day to avoid frightening horses waiting outside churches in the region. The Rose Parade returned to the streets of Pasadena in 2002 after being forced to cancel the 2021 event amid the coronavirus pandemic.
