Actress and storyteller Jean Donatto waits inside VIA Metropolitan Transit’s 1966 vintage Dreamliner bus before her performance as the late civil rights icon Rosa Parks during a celebration at La Villita on Thursday. VIA and the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum honored Parks during the ceremony that featured speakers and a musical performance by Rev. Lemelle Taylor.
Donatto played Parks next to the vintage green-and-silver 1966 Dreamliner bus that VIA sometimes brings out for San Antonio’s MLK March, telling the story of the 42-year-old woman who was far from the meek seamstress often portrayed in hasty histories of the movement. Told by Blake she would be arrested if she didn’t give up her to seat to a white man, Donatto spoke Parks’ simple reply: “You may do that.”The appreciative crowd, including VIA employees and African-American pastors, educators and activists, gave Donatto a warm ovation as she accepted a bouquet of flowers from a VIA staffer.
