Rory McIlroy went viral for what he said to a fan after being shouted at during the final round of the PGA Championship Sunday.

Aaron Rai emerged victorious after shooting five-under on Sunday to finish at nine-under overall. McIlroy entered the day just three shots back and had multiple chances to mount a comeback, but he closed Sunday with a one-under round amid several frustrating moments, particularly with the Pennsylvania crowd.

On one hole, after a poor shot that landed in a bunker, a fan shouted “USA” in reaction to the mistake. McIlroy then turned toward the crowd, signaled for security, and was heard on camera muttering, “shut the up. ”Fans appeared split on Rory McIlroy’s reaction to the moment, with some defending him and others criticizing both his response and crowd behavior.

“Embarrassing himself as always,” another wrote. “Used to be a fan but that faded after he won his last major. Has he always been this soft? ” a fan shared.

One more commented, “Every other professional sport has hecklers… stop protecting them… let them chatter away, deal with the elements. ”Regardless, fans will see McIlroy back in action later this month when he’s scheduled to compete at the Memorial Tournament beginning May 28.
