Easley, S.C., police officer Matthew Hare died Wednesday while trying to help a person off railroad tracks, police say. EASLEY, South Carolina — A rookie police officer was struck and killed by a train Wednesday while helping a person who was having a mental health crisis on the railroad tracks, police say.

“Officer Hare died saving the life of someone he did not know,” the release says. “He was called to protect and serve and that is exactly what he did every day. He is a hero.” Hare had been with the department for only months, having graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in March,Police have parked a patrol car in front of its department in honor of Hare so residents can stop an pay respects. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.
