Rookie musher Jeff Deeter maintains his lead in the Yukon Quest Alaska on day four, approaching the Eagle checkpoint. Deeter is roughly 15 miles ahead of Lauro Eklund in second place. ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Tuesday marked day four of the Yukon Quest Alaska , and the leader remains the same, rookie musher Jeff Deeter of Black Spruce Dog Sledding in Fairbanks.As of the time of publication, Deeter is approaching the checkpoint of Eagle. Deeter is roughly 15 miles ahead Lauro Eklund, who’s currently in second place, just ahead of Josi Shelly.

Alaska’s News Source caught up with Deeter at the checkpoint in Central. Deeter said he’s using this race as a primer for the Iditarod and enjoying the challenges the Yukon Quest presents. “So it’s been pretty fun every time Lauro goes by, he’s got something smart to say and it’s been entertaining for sure, as we go by, so we’ll probably just keep that up ‘cause we’re kind of running a different pace all the way to Eagle.”

Five mushers were running the Yukon Quest Alaska 200, which began in Fairbanks and concludes in Central.
