Australia’s love affair with rooftop solar continued last year, with solar PV systems now accounting for 25 per cent of renewable energy generation.
continued last year, with solar PV systems now accounting for 25 per cent of renewable energy generation, according to the latest investment update from the Clean Energy Council.
Clean Energy Council chief executive Kane Thornton said despite an encouraging end to the year, Australia had to accelerate renewable project development to meet its international climate targets.“To reach the federal government’s renewable energy generation target of 82 per cent by 2030, the pace of deployment for new large-scale projects needs to at least double,” Mr Thornton said.
Australia has more than doubled the amount of renewable energy since 2017, when it accounted for 16.9 per cent of generation. Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen said all options, including carbon capture and storage, were needed to reduce emissions.Wind accounted for 35.6 per cent of total renewable generation last year, followed by small-scale solar , hydro , medium and large-scale solar PV and bioenergy .
“We need to use all the tools in the toolkit. That includes developing a carefully designed portfolio of approaches, as no single technology can achieve the levels of sequestration likely to be needed.”

Closure of Liddell Power Station not to blame for rising energy prices: StablerThe recent shortage of electricity and spike in energy prices are the results of several mitigating factors, not because of the closure of the Liddell Power Station, says Energy Edge Managing Director Joshua Stabler. The announcement to close the power station was made in 2015, “so this is a plan that’s been eight years in the making”, Mr Stabler told Sky News Australia. “The market has known about this … there’s been no point at which the market in its liquid form hasn’t known that Liddell would be offline for this quarter and next quarter.” “Different points in time during 2022 we had 42 per cent of coal generators shut in New South Wales offline … Liddell was part of that but also outages across all of the other major coal generators in NSW.”
