Ex-White House doctor Ronny “Candyman” Jackson is running for Congress in Texas
his physician, but the damage was done, and Jackson withdrew from consideration in April 2018. Now, the so-called “Candyman” is preparing to make his comeback. On Monday, the former Navy officer and White House physicianMac Thornberry —one of several GOP lawmakers who have recently announced their retirement.
As one of 13 Republicans seeking the seat, Jackson has his work cut out for him. On the plus side, he’s a decorated Navy veteran and has some name recognition thanks to his involvement with Trump, and he could theoretically bring in an endorsement from the president, who called him a “great man” amid the allegations against him—which Jackson denied—andBut, of course, Jackson also has baggage. There are thethat doomed his VA nod: that he handed out “whatever prescriptions [White House staff] sought without paperwork,” was “explosive” and “abusive” toward colleagues, and allegedly wrecked a government car while drunk after a Secret Service party. There’s also the fact that he doesn’t live in the district he’s running to represent. According to the Texas Tribune, which firstJackson’s nascent congressional bid, that doesn’t legally disqualify him from running there, but it might not help him at the ballot box. Even before Jackson threw his hat in the ring, Thornberry himself expressed displeasure at the notion of “outside candidates” attempting to replace him. And while his association with Trump could attract some Republican voters, his GOP opponents could use the fact that he was also White House physician toagainst him. “The Obama Administration was a disastrous eight year period that destroyed the middle class, attacked traditional conservative values at every turn, and opened our borders to dangerous criminals and cartels,” Republican donorsaid in a statement, tying Jackson to the previous administration. “We welcome a spirited debate about which candidate will best represent the conservative values of Texas 13 in the weeks ahead.”
