Prior to his coaching career, Rivera played nine seasons as a linebacker for the Chicago Bears, being drafted in the second round of the 1984 draft. He was a key player on the Bears' 1985 Super Bowl champion squad. As a Cal student-athlete, Rivera distinguished himself as a linebacker, earning All-American honors in 1983 and setting a school record with 26.5 tackles for loss, including 13 sacks.
