Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a potential leading Republican presidential contender in 2024, attacked what he called “faddish ideologies” and Washington’s “floundering federal establishment” in remarks Tuesday at the inauguration of his second term.
Mr. DeSantis, 44 years old, said the state’s law-and-order agenda and its rejection of severe restrictions during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic had motivated people from other states to move to Florida in recent years. In the coming session of the Florida legislature, Mr. DeSantis will have the opportunity to showcase his conservative credentials ahead of aThe governor has often been critical of what he calls “woke capital”—entities that are part of the environmental, social and corporate-governance movement—and has in the past alluded to passing a law allowing people to carry concealed guns without permits.
Support for Messrs. DeSantis and Trump could look different in what will surely be a multicandidate primary field than it does in a head-to-head matchup. The former president was able to win his party’s 2016 nomination in part because the large number of candidates fractured support among non-Trump alternatives.was a standout for Republicans in an election year filled with disappointments.
If he decides to run for president, Mr. DeSantis isn’t expected to announce a bid until after his state’s legislative session ends in early May, people familiar with the early discussions have said.
