Tourists wanting close access to Rome's Trevi Fountain now pay 2 euros. The fee aims to manage overcrowding. Access remains free at night or from a distance.

by MARIA TEDESCO | The National News DeskStarting Feb. 2, tourists who want to get up close to the Trevi Fountain in Rome are required to pay 2 euros . The first tourists to pay the now mandatory fee for the once-free attraction were unfazed, saying it was a small price to pay to see the famous site, according to The Associated Press.

“Before, there were problems accessing the fountain. There were a lot of people. Now, it’s very easy,” said Ilhan Musbah, a tourist from Morocco. “You can take photos, you feel good, you’re comfortable, and on top of that 2 euros is not much.” The city of Rome aims to manage overcrowding around popular tourist attractions. The fee was put in place after a year-long experiment where lines were implemented near the edge of the fountain. Alessandro Onorato, Rome’s assessor of tourism, joked about the low cost, comparing the price to an attraction in New York. “I think tourists were shocked by the fact that the city of Rome is only asking for 2 euros for a site of this level,” Onorato said. “I believe that if the Trevi Fountain were in New York, they would have charged at least $100.” The fee can also be paid in advance online and is for those who want to get up close to the fountain during peak daylight hours. Those who want to go at night can still visit up close for free. The fee can also be skipped for those who want to view the fountain from further away.According to an old legend, if you throw a coin in the fountain over your shoulder and make a wish, you will one day return to Rome.Police are investigating a deadly shooting in Perry County. The shooting happened Thursday along West Main Street in Somerset. The police chief told ABC 6 that aAn OBGYN at Ohio State is responding after his name showed up repeatedly in newly released documents in the Jeffrey Epstein files. An Ohio woman appeared in court Tuesday on charges of child endangerment and torture/cruelty abuse.Multiple neighborhoods in north Columbus have not received a week's worth of mail.
