President Biden will visit Austin on Monday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act . This will be one his first public appearances since dropping out of the presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the democratic nomination.

It also is the second time this month that Austin has gone through the substantial undertaking of preparing for a presidential visit. “There is no question that this visit comes at a time when all eyes are on Joe Biden,” said Mark Lawrenz, Director of the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum. President Biden’s trip to Austin was originally planned for July 15th but was postponed after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In the wake of that political violence, his rescheduled visit will have enhanced security at the LBJ Library as well as along his route from the airport to the UT campus.“There will be disruptions in traffic. This museum, for what it’s worth, will be closed down that day. There will be very intense security over in this part of town,” said Lawrenz. President Biden’s exact route from Austin’s Airport to the LBJ Library on Red River Street is confidential. But the City of Austin is warning of traffic delays and rolling road closures from morning to evening. The presidential motorcade will likely use Interstate-35, Highway 183, or Highway 71. Dean Keeton Street and other roads around the University of Texas at Austin campus will also see delays and closures. At Austin’s Airport, officials say to expect minor impacts. A ground stop is issued during the president’s take-off and landing so during those times no other aircraft will be able to take off or land. Despite the inconveniences, the director of the library applauds President Biden’s choice to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the LBJ Library. “The fact that he prioritized coming to Austin and being with us is just an enormous thrill for everyone here at the LBJ Library. I hope that people in Austin and around the state feel that same thrill that he chose to come here,” said Lawrenz.
