“This is a guy that’s worked directly with Sasaki, he was a teammate of Sasaki in Japan four years ago when he first came up as a rookie so there’s a relationship there,” Mitchell said. “And that’s one of the reasons that I kind of thought the Blue Jays would be kind of in on this process because I heard that relationship is a very strong one.
“So the Blue Jays have kind of built a relationship with this kid kind of on their way up. And you know, I think that’s probably paying dividends right now.” In 2017, Toronto began investing more time and resources in Asia. It’s resulted in them becoming something of a destination for many Asian players, like, who pitched parts of three seasons in Toronto before being traded to the Houston Astros ahead of last year’s trade deadline.“There’s some talk around that that he has spoken with Sasaki and kind of told him that he loved his time in Toronto,” Mitchell said.
